Saving the world a watt at a time

Snorestore works from offices which are best described as cosy. We like our workspace though and it has everything we need to function efficiently and effectively.

Recently we have installed a 24 hour power consumption monitoring system. We wanted to know how much we were using, and whether we could reduce it.

The hardware comes from Alert Me, a very, very clever Cambridge-based business which has become, in just a couple of years, the UK’s leading provider of remote energy monitoring products. Alert Me also makes and supports our security and alarm system.

The monitoring has shown us that even leaving a mobile phone charger plugged in adds to our daily energy total. The printers, the computers and all the other techie stuff are on most of the time. They need to be. But we are now learning to switch them off when they’re not required.

The system is so accurate, that we can check from wherever we are, at home or abroad, what the office is doing. We know if the lights were left on when the last person went home and locked up. We know *who* locked up and what time they did it. If the printer has been left on, we can switch it off. We can arm and disarm the security system, see what the security cameras are seeing, and call the fire brigade if the smoke alarm is triggered. Inevitably, there is an app for that.

We thought we’d give you a glimpse of how it works. Obviously there’s a lot more to it than a simple graphic, but this is one way of demonstrating what such technology can do for a business – and for you. Over time, we won’t just be saving energy, we’ll be saving money too. Time shown is GMT:
