It’s summer – or maybe not

Well it *should* be summer but the forecast is pants and we’re not holding our breath that it’s going to improve any time soon.

Needless to say, many of us will be escaping the rain and going on holiday in the next couple of months (the luckiest ones will be going abroad). Take some time now to read through the key Snorestore sections on earplugs for sleeping, earplugs for swimming, earplugs for travelling and earplugs for children and then maybe look at our recommendations for a peaceful holiday:

Getting round Royal Mail’s price rises

Admittedly, it’s not great to have to put prices up, but we fully understand why Royal Mail is doing this. How many of us send letters regularly? Not enough of us, it seems, and letter delivery is very expensive for Royal Mail.

Snorestore of course isn’t immune to these price rises and while we have always been careful to charge as little as possible for postage and packing, we can’t absorb the new tariffs completely.  Packets in particular will cost considerably more than they do now – at least £2.70 – and packets make up the majority of our orders.

However, we have a solution in hand, which means that postage costs for some items* will cost you just the same as they do now – but only if you agree to receive your products in a slightly different format.

For example, one of our most popular products is SafeSound Original Earplugs – the 10-pair pack in particular. Currently, we charge you £1.25 in postage for this product (it costs us more than that but that’s what you pay). Under the new Royal Mail tariffs, you would have to pay £2.70 – more than twice as much. Clearly we can’t expect you to pay this on top of the product price of just £6.99.

So what we propose to do, is to unbox the earplugs, keeping them in their sealed pouch, and flatten the box. Placed side by side in a padded envelope, this product can then be classed as as a large letter size rather than a packet, which means the postage cost is massively reduced. As a result, you won’t be paying any more for postage for this item after April 30th than you do now.

SafeSound Original Earplugs unboxed

"deconstructed packaging"

The downside of this is obviously that cosmetically, it doesn’t look very tidy when you open the envelope, as you can see in this picture >>

The upside: the cost of postage and packing doesn’t have to go up. Given that Royal Mail manages to squash quite a lot of the stuff we send out, we don’t know why we haven’t done this before. We will be explaining on each product page where this can be done, that this is how the product will arrive.

*other products where we propose to deconstruct the packaging include:

Mack’s SafeSound Ultra Earplugs (10 pairs)
Mack’s SafeSound SlimFit Earplugs (10 pairs)
Mack’s DreamGirl Earplugs (10 pairs)
Mack’s PillowSoft Earplugs (2 pairs)

and others to be confirmed.

Please let us know via the comments box or by email what you think of this plan.

Small but mighty: Orange v blue earplugs

Sorky Surfing Earplugs

Sorky Surfing Earplugs

This last week saw the arrival at Snorestore of two new earplugs, both of which we are delighted to be stocking for the first time in this, our tenth anniversary year.

First up: Sorky Earplugs. Designed primarily for surfers, they hail from France and as you can see from the picture, are of a unique shape and configuration. They’re specifically designed to keep water out, but to allow the wearer to hear what is going on around them. The reviews speak for themselves – don’t go in the water without them.

Mighty Plugs

Mighty Plugs

Our second new brand are Mighty Plugs. We’d seen these over the years and wondered how the manufacturers managed to get such glowing testimonials for their product without apparently having to advertise them at all. Now we know. They are AWESOME. Best for sleeping and general noise reduction, it took 24 hours from them appearing on the Snorestore website to the first review coming in. We’ll reproduce it here in its entirety:

“I just wanted to let you know that I am so grateful for your Mighty Plugs earplugs.  For the first time in ages I get a good nights sleep.  A wonderful invention and I can’t imagine how I used to survive before Mighty Plugs entered my life.  I’m even more delighted that you exist in GB now and I can cut down on the shipping costs.  Keep up the good work!”

Snorestore is sexist – and that’s official

Sexist Earplugs from Snorestore

Sexist Earplugs from Snorestore

We had someone call us today (020 8861 3149) who wanted advice on which type of earplug would be best for them.

This is always a tricky one for us at Snorestore, as, with the best will in the world, we don’t know without seeing the person in situ what the noise level is they’re being exposed to, how sensitive they are to noise, or how big (or small) their ear canals are.

Undaunted, we will do our level best to come up with a solution. Makes sense, huh? We’re a business after all.

Today Fred suggested to our caller that a Women’s Sample Pack would be the best place for her to start her quest for a suitable earplug to drown out the noise of her partner’s snores. Her response? “Earplugs for wimmin? That’s soooo sexist!”

*snort*

If it’s sexist to say that most men are stronger than most women, most men are taller than most women, most men weigh more than most women, then yes, dear caller, it’s absolutely sexist to have a sample pack of earplugs designed for women, by women. Because like it or not, most women have smaller and shorter ear canals than men. And not surprisingly, the Women’s Sample Earplugs Pack is the first port of call for any woman coming to the Snorestore website who’s fed up with her noisy partner depriving her of her sleep.

Sexist, my arras.

Earplugs for Thunderstorms

Dual filter HearPlugzDF earplugs from Snorestore

HearPlugzDF Dual Filter Earplugs

For some time Snorestore has been looking for an earplug which deals well with sudden impact noise, such as thunderclaps, gunshots, barking dogs and so on. Most ear plugs can cope to a certain extent, but hardly any can reduce the sudden, heart-stopping scariness of an unexpected loud noise.

Fortunately we are now able to offer a good solution, in the form of HearPlugzDF earplugs  from our partners in the United States, Ear Inc. HearPlugsDF come with filters, one of which is removeable if you prefer. They have been successfully tested with the US military with good results.

They come in three different sizes for different sizes of ear canals, and in two colours. These earplugs are also excellent for tiring long-term noise such as that suffered by motorcyclists and truck drivers. You can read more about them on the Snorestore website on the dedicated HearPlugzDF page.
