How to use silicone putty earplugs

Make sure the ear opening is clean and dry. A tip from the expert: don't use moisturiser or handcream until after you've put your earplugs in place. Any trace of cream or grease on your hands will affect how the earplugs adhere to your ear opening. In other words, they won't stick properly or make a proper seal.

Warm the plug in your hands before rolling the whole thing into a ball. Do not cut the earplug in half or elongate. The earplug is the right size already. Place the plug over your ear opening and flatten it to form an airtight seal. Another tip: push your hair behind your ears before you do this as silicone and hair are not happy bedfellows: if the earplug sticks to your ear, it will also stick to your hair.

Do not, under any circumstances, insert the earplug into your ear canal. This is dangerous. Nothing, not even cotton sticks, should be put into the ear. You can damage delicate structures inside, and even rupture the eardrum. The whole point of silicone putty earplugs is to cover the outside of the ear, keeping noise well and truly out. If you suspect the seal is not secure, remove the earplug and replace it.

To loosen or remove the earplug, press gently upwards behind your ear. It should come away easily. Keep the original box handy to put them in until you need them again. For best results when flying, wear your earplugs the whole flight. Throw the earplugs away when they are dirty or when they don't stick any more.
